Choosing a shop

How to choose a laundry shop near you

A practical checklist for picking a local laundry: service range, published prices, turnaround, pickup coverage, itemised bills and how to compare shops on WashlyIndia.

6 min readBy The WashlyIndia team

Most people pick a laundry shop by walking past it. That works until a favourite shirt comes back shrunk, or a bill arrives with a number nobody explained. A few minutes of comparison up front usually settles the question for years — and almost all of it can be done before you hand anything over.

WashlyIndia is a technology platform that makes that comparison possible: shops publish their own service list and prices, and you can see them side by side. The cleaning itself is done by the shop you choose, which is an independent business. Here is what to look at.

1. Does the shop actually offer what you need?

A shop that is excellent at everyday wash-and-fold may not take embellished ethnic wear, leather bags or heavy curtains. On WashlyIndia, each shop lists its own services and the items priced under them, so you can check before you travel rather than after.

  • Everyday laundry — wash and fold, wash and iron, steam ironing.
  • Dry cleaning for suits, blazers, coats and anything that cannot take water.
  • Speciality care — sarees, lehengas, sherwanis, beadwork and zari.
  • Household items — bedsheets, duvets, blankets, curtains.
  • Shoe, bag and accessory care, which many shops do not offer at all.

2. Are the prices published, item by item?

A price list per item is the single best signal of a well-run shop. It means the shop has thought about its costs, and it means you can predict the bill. Shops on WashlyIndia price at the item level — "shirt, ₹40 per piece" rather than "shirts, from ₹30" — and that is the rate you see when you build a pickup request.

Prices are set by the shop, not by WashlyIndia

Every rate you see on the platform is the shop's own. WashlyIndia does not set, cap or negotiate prices, and it does not add a service fee on top of the shop's rate.

3. How far away is it — and does it come to you?

Distance matters twice: once for the trip you would otherwise make, and once for whether the shop will collect at all. Each shop on WashlyIndia sets its own service radius, so when you search from your location the directory only shows shops whose radius actually covers you, nearest first.

A shop outside that radius is not hidden if you search it by name — it is shown with a clear "doesn't deliver here" marker, so you know the shop exists but will not travel to you.

4. What is the realistic turnaround?

Ask for the normal turnaround, not the best case. Most shops quote two to three days for regular laundry and longer for dry cleaning or speciality work. If you need something sooner, many shops offer an express option at an extra charge, which they price themselves — you can flag a request as express and the shop confirms the surcharge when it accepts.

5. Will you get an itemised bill?

An itemised bill is your record of what was handed over and what was charged. On WashlyIndia, once a shop accepts your request it becomes a real order with a line per item, quantities, rates, any express surcharge, GST where the shop applies it, and the total. Every payment recorded against that order shows up too, so what is still outstanding is never a matter of memory.

6. How does the shop handle a problem?

Damage and loss are rare but not hypothetical. Ask what happens if something is stained, torn or missing before you become a regular. Because the shop is the service provider, this is a conversation with the shop — a clear answer given up front is a good sign, and a shop that will not answer it is telling you something.

7. Are you likely to use it enough for a prepaid pack?

Some shops sell prepaid packs: you pay an advance and receive a larger balance of service value, which comes off your bills until it runs out or its validity ends. Packs are worth it only if your normal volume will consume the balance inside the window. That is a per-shop offer with per-shop numbers, so check the pack before you buy rather than assuming a standard deal.

Comparing shops on WashlyIndia

  1. 1Create a free WashlyIndia account.
  2. 2Search the directory from your location to see the shops whose service area covers you, with the distance to each.
  3. 3Open a shop to read its published services and per-item prices.
  4. 4Send a pickup request to the shop you want, with your items, address and preferred time.
  5. 5The shop reviews the request and either accepts it — turning it into a priced order you can track — or declines it with a reason.

One account works across every shop you use, so your orders, receipts and outstanding dues stay in one place even if you use a different shop for dry cleaning than you do for bedding.

Questions readers ask about this topic

Does WashlyIndia recommend or rank laundry shops?

No. The directory orders shops by distance from the location you search from, not by a rating or a paid placement. WashlyIndia does not run a review or star-rating system, so nothing on the platform claims one shop is better than another — the published services, prices and distance are there for you to judge.

Can I compare prices between two shops before I commit?

Yes. Each shop page lists the services that shop offers and the price of each item under them, so you can open two shops and compare the same item. Nothing is committed until you send a pickup request, and even then the shop has to accept it before it becomes an order.

Is there a fee for using WashlyIndia to find a shop?

No. Creating an account, browsing shops, sending pickup requests and tracking your orders are free for customers. You pay the shop for the cleaning, at the shop's own rates.

What if no shop covers my area yet?

The directory will say so rather than showing you shops that cannot serve you. You can still find a shop by name and contact it directly — its phone number is on its page — but a shop outside its own service radius is not obliged to collect from you.
